The new species Heterodermia urtasuni Chaves, Umaña & Sipman is described from Costa Rica and Venezuela, as one of the many lichenological novelties discovered during the TICOLICHEN biodiversity inventory in Costa Rica. The new species, which has also been found in Venezuela, is similar to Heterodermia speciosa but differs in its large soralia produced on short, lateral lobes, closely resembling the soralia of Heterodermia galactophylla. This new species is dedicated to the Ambassador of Spain in Costa Rica, Mr. Juan Jose Urtasun Erro, in recognition of his efforts to promote the study of biodiversity and bioalfabetización, which constitute solid links that unite our people.
