This article is a part of the thematic issue International symposium – Tribute to Alcide d'Orbigny – Muséum, Paris, 1st to 5th July 2002 – Part II

This communication comprises a presentation, followed by a chronological table about the young King of Portugal, D. Pedro V (born in Lisbon, 1837; proclaimed King in 1853; died in Lisbon, 1861) and some of his relationships to Palaeontology. Pedro V had a deep interest in Science and the development of his country. He was a naturalist, a connoisseur in Ornithology and Conchology, who was also acquainted with Palaeontology. His memoirs and especially the included comments about his voyages in Europe in 1854 and 1855 show a critical, but constructive, attitude. He reports (among others) his visits to the British Museum (Natural History) and especially to the ‘Muséum national d’histoire naturelle’ in Paris. He met there several professors, as Alcide d’Orbigny, a renowned palaeontologist. D’Orbigny offered Pedro V an excellent collection of fossils (organised by stratigraphical order) from his own great collection. This gift, as well as another (by the Museum, Paris) of zoologic specimens comprising some hundreds of birds, have been more or less regarded as a compensation for the large amount of specimens from the Royal Ajuda Museum (Lisbon) that was requisitioned by É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire during the French occupation (1808). This opened even more the way for Franco-Portuguese cooperation, which is still maintained.
