A collection of cystocarpic, spermatangial, and tetrasporangiate specimens of a red algal species from the South Sandwich Islands in the Antarctic presents evidence to identify this material as Gracilaria prolifera Reinsch and to conclude that this is an older available name for Hymenocladiopsis crustigena Moe.Thus, the binomial Hymenocladiopsis prolifera (Reinsch) comb. nov. is proposed.
