Virola kwatae Sabatier, a new species of forest tree from French Guyana, is described; its taxonomic affinities, and biological and ecological features are discussed. This species, previously confused with V. michelii Heckel, was observed extensively in the field, especially regarding its dispersal system, which is highly specialized for a few frugivores, the most efficient being the spider monkey (Ateles paniscus).
