Publié le 31 janvier 2013

This guide first presents the regional setting and environmental conditions prevailing around New Caledonia. With about ten thousand species living in salted and brackish waters, foraminifera constitute the most diverse group of shelled microorganism in modern oceans, and substantially contribute to biodiversity. They are also one of the most valuable tools for environmental assessment and monitoring programs. This guide by Jean-Pierre Debenay provides a description of the environmental conditions around New Caledonia, an accessible introduction to foraminifera, and a summary of the research that has been carried out from the island nation. It also describes more than one thousand species of foraminifera collected around New Caledonia, accompanying each entry with SEM micrographs and notes on its distribution. Organized into groups to make it easy to identify each species, A Guide to 1,000 Foraminifera from Southwestern Pacific, New Caledonia will be a useful resource for specialists and non-specialists alike.
