A new species of Pilumnus Leach, 1816 (Decapoda, Brachyura) from Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles, with morphological comparisons to regional congeners

Pilumnus Leach, 1861 is a speciose cosmopolitan genus of marine crabs typical from rocky and coral coastal environments and known to occur in tropical and temperate oceans and seas worldwide, including the waters of western Atlantic and Caribbean Sea surrounding the Lesser Antilles, a recognized hotspot of biodiversity in Caribbean. Despite recent sampling efforts, this region remains underexplored, limiting understanding of its marine fauna. To address this gap, several field expeditions have been carried out, including KARUBENTHOS 2012. This expedition extensively collected specimens of various taxonomic groups, expanding documentation of biodiversity in the Lesser Antilles.
An enigmatic ammonite population from the late Callovian of Montreuil-Bellay (Maine-et-Loire, France)

An enigmatic ammonite (Ammonoida, Ammonitida) population represented by ten immature specimens from the late Callovian (Pseudopeltoceras leckenbyi Horizon) of Montreuil-Bellay is documented in this work. No evident similarities can be found between the studied material and any previously described species overall, suggesting at first glance that this population represents a new taxon. However, a thorough literature review on ammonoid pathologies and a detailed investigation on the morphology and ornamentation of the specimens lead us to instead support the hypothesis that the studied population reflects abnormal specimens.

Evaluate conservation status and issues of species require a precise knowledge of the distribution, population size, documented threats, and past population trends. However, the exhaustivity of this information can be difficult to reach when it concerns sensitive and inaccessible area, also when the monitoring effort is limited by ethical rules or experts’ availability. Filling the gaps and eventual limits of current protocols is possible by the evaluation of the complementarity of the monitoring tools and specific knowledge of the target species. Among the available monitoring tools, we are interested in bioacoustics. Will the combination of life science (biology) and sound engineering (acoustics) be the new assistant to ecologists, particularly ornithologists?
Functional morphology of Pleistocene and Holocene brown bears (Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758): a 3D geometric morphometric approach to masseter biomechanics and evolutionary ecology

Little is known about the European Pleistocene brown bear Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758. To assess its ecological adaptations, the mandibular morphology of fossil U. arctos was analysed using 3D geometric morphometrics and compared to that of closely related Ursini. Landmarks for 3D digitisation of the mandible were chosen to reflect functional morphology relating to the musculus masseter. Extant and extinct Pleistocene Ursini of the species U. deningeri Reichenau, 1904, U. spelaeus Rosenmüller, 1794, U. arctos and U. maritimus Phipps, 1774 were digitised or surface scanned. Generalised Procrustes superimposition was performed on the coordinates and allometry corrected for using a regression analysis pooled by species.
Review of Vellozo’s Bignoniaceae: synonym detected, historical localities interpreted, and new lectotypes designated, plus epitypifications

A comprehensive overview of the Bignoniaceae described in Floræ Fluminensis is provided, and all names received a careful analysis. This review includes three interpretations of original collection localities and an illustrated explanation of the differences between the collections of illustrations. Besides, each name was re-evaluated and received comments on its distribution and/or original collection location, as well as nomenclatural and taxonomic notes. Here, we propose 41 new lectotypes, two new epitypes, one new synonym, and two new orthographic variants that were recognized.
The Pectinoidea (Bivalvia, Propeamussiidae and Pectinidae) of Walters Shoal, with descriptions of six new species

Nine species of Pectinoidea Rafinesque, 1815 (six Propeamussiidae Abbott, 1954, three Pectinidae Rafinesque, 1815) are herein reported from Walters Shoal, south of Madagascar. Six species are described as new to science and are considered endemic to this region, whereas three are well-known species. The new species are: Parvamussium cancellinum n. sp., Parvamussium laetum n. sp., Parvamussium pustulatum n. sp., Cyclopecten broii n. sp., Cyclopecten simardi n. sp. and Talochlamys janiqueae n. sp. The previously known species are: Propeamussium meridionale (E. A. Smith, 1885), Pecten sulcicostatus G. B. Sowerby II, 1842 and Cryptopecten bullatus Dautzenberg & Bavay, 1912.
Neurovascular system and dental renewal in the rostrum of Spinosauridae: new descriptions and implications on non-olfactive snout sensitivity of dinosaurs

The morphological analogy between the Spinosauridae and crocodilians rostrum has been widely documented. More recently, the supposed existence in Spinosauridae of specialized sensory organs such as those encountered in crocodilians (called ISOs for Integumentary Sensorial Organs) has been advanced by some authors. However, no complete representation of the neurovascular network in Spinosauridae rosette had yet been described and the association between dense neurovascular branching and skin sensitivity remained only a hypothesis. The amazing internal preservation of the premaxillae of Cristatusaurus lapparenti Taquet & Russell, 1998 and Spinosaurus maroccanus Russell, 1996 from the MNHN of Paris finally gives us now a precise idea of the situation.

Degeneraster spenceri n. gen., n. sp. (Asteroidea; Ordovician) and interpretating the early history of the Asterozoa

Degeneraster spenceri n. gen., n. sp., a new genus and species of Asteroidea de Blainville, 1830 (Echinodermata) from the Late Ordovician (middle Katian) of Morocco, is described. Similarities and differences between basal Somasteroidea Spencer, 1951 and D. spenceri n. gen., n. sp. are reviewed. Based on ambulacral (i.e., axial and adaxial) morphology, D. spenceri n. gen., n. sp. is assigned to the basal asteroid order Euaxosida Blake, 2018; extraxial morphology in contrast includes expressions that are widely found among more derived Paleozoic asterozoans. Degeneraster spenceri n. gen., n. sp. is anomalous among euaxosidan Asteroidea in lacking an ambital framework.
A new Carboniferous coelacanth illuminates the evolution of the actinistian hyobranchial skeleton

The hyobranchial skeleton plays a fundamental role in breathing and feeding in gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates). Nevertheless, despite a relatively rich fossil record spanning more than 400 million years, our knowledge of the anatomy and evolution of the hyoid and branchial arches of coelacanths is limited due to the extremely delicate and poorly ossified small elements forming the arches, which are rarely preserved. Comparative data are mainly available from the extant Latimeria chalumnae Smith, 1939, which represents a crucial landmark for all morphological descriptions of extinct coelacanth taxa. Here we introduce a new genus and species, Aemilia stellata n. gen., n. sp., from the Late Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) of Texas, United States.
First occurrence of the genus Yaldwynopsis Guinot & Richer de Forges, 1995 in the Atlantic Ocean, Guadeloupe Island, with description of a new species (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Homolidae)

A homolid crab of the genus Yaldwynopsis Guinot & Richer de Forges, 1995, collected using traps at a depth of 310 m off Guadeloupe Island, Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea, represents the first record of the genus in the Atlantic Ocean. The specimen, an ovigerous female, is compared with the four known species of the genus, all previously described from the Pacific Ocean. It is identified as a new species (Y. couppeyi n. sp.) and formally described in this study. Additionally, a key to all known Yaldwynopsis species is provided, along with discussions on geographic distributions and fishing gear selectivity.

The practice of naming an organism after a real person (eponymy) has been known since Greek antiquity, but remained rare until the end of the seventeenth century. Around 1700, eponymy underwent a rapid and spectacular expansion, notably under the impetus of a French botanist and traveller, Charles Plumier, who named many plant genera in this way. Eponymy developed over the following decades, but initially remained confined to botany. It moved into zoology, but only at the level of specific names, from the 1750s onward, when the new Linnaean system of nomenclature was introduced. It then became a common way of creating scientific zoonyms, up to the present day.
