The Peri-Tethys Programme, started in 1993, examines the influence of the Tethyan evolution on the bordering cratons since the break-up of the Pangea through the accretion of oceanic domains and finally the collision between the major bordering plates which led to inversions within the epicratonic basins. The Peri-Tethys Memoir 5 is the issue of the International Meeting held in Rabat (1997). This volume like the two previous ones (Peri-Tethys Memoirs 3 and 4) deals with the two great geographic domains involved in the Programme: the Southern and the Northern Platforms. It differs from the other volumes by the fact it is mainly devoted to the Southern Platform (ten papers) and particularly to Morocco (seven papers). Only two papers concern the Northern Platform. ln the frrst part, the first paper analyses the Late Carboniferous of Morocco, the second and the third papers are devoted respectively to the Triassic and Liassic of Morocco. The fourth one presents the Jurassic global events and their records in Tunisia. The paper 5 presents the Mesozoic and Cainozoic evolution of the Moroccan Atlasic domain. The two next papers deal with the tectonic evolution and the subsidence history of Morocco. The eighth paper presents the hydrocarbon system of Morocco. The next one is an overview of the Syrian Jurassic. The last paper of this first part concerns the basin development and the tectonic history of the Euphrates grabens using subsurface data. ln the short second part, one paper presents the palaeogeographic evolution of the Eastern European basin during the Late Palaeozoic. The last paper focuses on the palaeotectonic evolution of the Polish Trough Cretaceous basins.
Sylvie Crasquin-Soleau and Éric Barrier (CNRS - Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris) coordinated this volume which follows the International Peri-Tethys Meeting held in Rabat (Morocco in June 1997).
