Morphological and molecular evidence confirm that Sciuro-hypnum dovrense, nowadays considered conspecific with S. glaciale, is actually a distinct species that can be distinguished from related species by gametophytic characters, such as plant size and colour, branch shape, stem leaf shape and orientation, and costa length. An amended description of this moss is presented and its diagnostic characters are discussed. Finally, the known distribution of the species is extended with several localities from mountainous areas of Scandinavia, and its habitat preferences are inferred mainly based on specimen label information.
