The taxonomic identity of Platyhypnidium torrenticola has been studied using nrITS sequence data. A comparison with the most closely related species, P. riparioides, reveals that the nrITS sequences are identical with the majority of the European and African sequences of P. riparioides. It is concluded that the morphological characters used to segregate both species are within the variability of P. riparioides and that both names correspond to the same species.
