The genus Chicoreus and related genera (Gastropoda : Muricidae) in the Indo-West Pacific

en Volume 154
Roland HOUART

Published on 20 October 1992

The genus Chicoreus Montfort, 1810 is divided into five subgenera : Chicoreus (s.s.) ; Triplex Perry, 1810, Siratus Jousseaume, 1880, Rhizophorimurex Oyama, 1950, and Chicopinnatus n. subgen. Naquetia Jousseaume, 1880 and Chicomurex Arakawa, 1964 are treated as separate genera, due to differences in radula morphology. A new subgenus of Chicoreus, Chicopin natus is introduced for three species formerly classified in the genus Pterynotus Swainson, 1833. All of the species are systematically revised and illustrated. The Recent species are redescribed and their distributions are mapped.

63 Recent species and one subspecies are recognized : 7 are referable to Chicoreus (s.s.), 39 to Triplex, 2 to Siratus, 1 to Rhizophorimurex, 3 to Chicopinnatus, 5 to Naquetia, and 7 to Chicomurex. One new species is named : Chicomurex protoglobosus. Of the 19 fossil species, 17 are assigned to Triplex and 2 to Chicomurex.
