In samples collected between April 2004 and August 2006 from shallow lakes and reservoirs in southern Spain some noteworthy planktonic green algae of the family Botryococcaceae (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) were found. A new species, Lobocystis inconspicua sp. nov., is described and taxonomic comments on some members of the family Botryococcaceae are made. Dichotomococcus curvatus and forms of Botryococcus morphologically similar to Botryococcus protuberans and Botryococcus terribilis are recorded for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula.
