A new species, Carpoapseudes prospectnes, is described from the South Atlantic off Brazil. This is the first record of this genus from depths above 800 m. The systematic position of the genus is discussed. Carpoapseudes prospectnes n. sp. shares many characters with C. curticarpus Bacescu, 1982, but can be distinguished from this and all other species in the genus by the presence of an anteriorly directed spine on the basis of pereopod 1 and 2 and by the length of carpus and merus being subequal.
